A landmark kinetic sculpture inspired by one of Canterbury’s most iconic native trees.
Standing 5.3 metres high, Kōwhai is designed to become the hero artwork of the Waihi River Trail. Created by internationally recognised New Zealand sculptor Andrew Drummond, this striking kinetic sculpture combines engineering, movement and natural forms to create an artwork that is constantly responding to its environment.
Inspired by the distinctive seed pod and seed of the kōwhai tree, the sculpture celebrates a species deeply connected to the landscapes of Canterbury and Aotearoa.

About the Artwork
Kōwhai is part of Andrew Drummond’s ongoing exploration of the forms found within the kōwhai seed pod.
The sculpture features two independently rotating elements: an upper rotor representing a seed enclosed within its pod, and a lower rotor representing a released seed. Designed to move in even gentle breezes, the sculpture becomes a visual expression of the surrounding environment, responding to changing wind conditions throughout the day.
As the wind strengthens, the sculpture transforms into a dynamic instrument, revealing the unseen forces shaping the landscape around it.
Fabricated entirely from stainless steel, the seed pod will feature a rich brown patina while the seeds are gilded in gold, reflecting the natural colours of the kōwhai pod and seed. Precision-engineered bearings and internal components ensure smooth movement and exceptional durability with minimal maintenance requirements.
Location
Kōwhai will be installed on the Waihi River Trail near the northern end of Todd Park, close to the existing sculpture Lock n Love n. The location will allow walkers and cyclists to experience the sculpture up close, while carefully positioned viewing windows will also provide glimpses of the artwork from Waihi Terrace.
Its placement beside the river will provide an ever-changing backdrop, allowing the sculpture’s movement

The Artist
Andrew Drummond is one of New Zealand’s most distinguished contemporary sculptors, with a career spanning more than four decades.
Renowned for combining artistic vision with engineering precision, Drummond’s works often incorporate movement, natural forms and distinctive gilded elements. His sculptures can be found throughout New Zealand in public spaces, botanic gardens, private collections and significant architectural settings.
His ability to create artworks that are both technically sophisticated and visually captivating has earned him an international reputation, making Kōwhai a significant addition to the Geraldine Sculpture Trail.
