In the loop – September 2025

It is so encouraging to see the signs of spring, those lovely warm days and an absolute joy to be outside, but they are often a precursor to the opposite.

It has been a few years since the generous Aigantighe Art Gallery loaned the sculptures on the Waihi River Trail to the Geraldine Sculpture Trail. At the time, I wrote about the inspiration behind Andrew Cheeseman’s “Lock N Love N” sculpture and thought it timely to reiterate its meaning. This work doesn’t have a plaque as it is on loan.

It was during COVID that Andrew was inspired by Jack Lovelock, Timaru-born and a gold medalist at the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games for the 1500m.

The outer frame depicts the race track, and the words are a play on Jack’s surname and the COVID lockdown—a time in NZ history we all experienced, some happily, others not so. The colors are bright and intended to uplift. Thank you, Andrew; your sculpture sits beautifully on the trail. We are grateful to you and the Aigantighe Art Gallery.

 As always, Rosie 027 222 7663.

An elected Artist Member of the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts, Askin has completed major public commissions, including the Paper-boy in Timaru and the Blacksmith at Orari.
